I think that by your definition of x, the situation you described should be *HGB(*FASB(IBM)). In that sense, FASB & HGB is the set (sorry I'm using that term) of all transactions that can be viewed from both HGB and FASB's viewpoints, for example stocks traded in both markets.

While it's true that set theory wasn't explicit in your question, you did imply it by using the term intersect. So what I did was basically map X and Y onto sets and then give you a set - X&Y - which you could then map the set back onto a domain of knowledge (i.e. all knowledge that applies to Christianity and Buddhism simultaneously). Again, I'm mostly doing educated guesses here; I can't think of any way to mathematically represent knowledge except sets, but then again, I'm not really an expert.
