In reply to: Kris 's message, "Actually Isabella married the SON of the man she was betrothed to when she met John. The Hugh she married was Hugh jr so to speak : )" on 10:43:57 03/02/01 Fri

Encyclodedia Britannica says Isabella was betrothed to father, married to son. Genealogy server at Hull University says betrothed and married to son. Some very obscure document on the internet even says married and betrothed to father.

I found a document at the French National Library about this confusion. There was a continuous line of Hughs up to Hugh VIII, who had a son and heir Hugh. This son died before his father and his younger brother Geoffroy inherited title and county. Next in succession was Geoffroy's sun Hugh. The problem is that some historians counted the son of Hugh VIII as Hugh IX, and the father of Isabella's husband as Hugh X, whereas others counted the father as Hugh IX and the husband as Hugh X. Isabella was betrothed and married to the same Hugh who is nowadays usually counted ad X, the switch from father to son is a mere artefact of unclear sources.

If you are interested I can send you the document, it's in French language. I'm still looking for some info on Isabella's and John's family life and found a few sources that might be interesting. I didn't have enough time to see if I can find them as online documents though, that will have to wait.

Did you ever read soc.genealogy.medieval? It's pretty funny (of course not planned to be so) and sometimes even interesting.
