Subject: Bob in San Francisco!

Bob Geldof's show at the Filmore, in San Francisco, was one of the best things I've ever seen!

Yes, yes, I'm given to hyperboyle, but, it really was great. The last show I saw that was this good was... probably Bob Geldof at Slims in 1993! (Well, that or KISS's reunion tour, but, come on! How can Bob compete with fire and flying and make-up and ... uh... never mind!!)

Bob is a consumate performer, and he played brilliantly the whole time - he kept the audience entertained with witty stories between the songs, and while the place was set up like a dinner theatre thing with tables and what-not on the dance floor, he had the whole place up on their feet by Rat Trap, and the audience went wild durring the last song (a reprise of Great Song of Indifference) - One of the best concerts I've ever seen! (and I've seen KISS! er.. wait - let me try again...And I've seen U2!!)

No words would to the show justice, but I did manage to (because of the "dinner theatre" set-up and the kind use of one of the bar-maid's pens...) write down the set-list, so, just for posterity, here it is:

The Great Song of Indifference
Too Late God
The Chains of Pain
A Gospel Song
A Sex Thing
Walking Back To Happiness
One For Me
Mudslide
My Birthday Suit
I Don't Like Mondays
Someone's Looking at You
Room 19
Inside Your Head
The Soft Soil
Mary of the 4th Fourm
The End of the World
Rat Trap
Pale While Girls
A Hole to Fill
The Great Song of Indifference (reprise)

What a great bunch of tunes!! I was SO happy to hear "Soft Soil" - always one of my favorites!!

He gave a great introduction to the Soft Soil - which put this thought into my head - he's a great writer - (Is That It? should be required reading!) - I think it would be nice to see a collection of stories about his songs from his pen. Here on the web-site maybe?

Anyway - it was a great show, and I had a wonderful time, and I hope it isn't another ten years before I get to see him again!!

>Hey Mike, I saw Bob in Chicago a week ago. I have to echo your thoughts. The show sounds very similar to ours, execpt one guy wanted to hear "(I never loved) Eva Braun", Bob tried for 5 minutes before saying "Oh F___ it" and went into "Diamond Smiles" instead. The concert was a high point in my life. I'll never forget it. Dennis

Wow, Dennis - that sounds great!!

When I saw Geldof at Slim's in 1993 he tried to do Mary of the 4th Fourm, forgot the lyrics, and did Diamond Smiles instead! That must be his default Rats tune! And a great one too!!!

Tho', there's nothing wrong with Eva Bruan, so...

Wasn't his show great??

I just saw Bob last night in Seattle. What a show!!! He did Mary of the 4th Form too, but what was really cool is that he did "Dave" and seemed to appreciate someone suggesting it. His set list was very similiar to that of Chicago. He seemed to really be enjoying himself performing - the show was nearly 2 and 1/2 hours long and we loved every moment of it. I just hope that he doesn't wait another 9 years to tour again.

I agree with you completely Mike-O! I've seen U2 four times and I love them, but Bob's intimate concert at the Palais Royale in Toronto was THE BEST concert I've ever seen too! And "Is That It?" SHOULD be required reading! I just told my best friend that. She teaches Grades 9 and 10 and she's going to use passages from his book in her class. I think it should definitely be on a curriculum reading list for seniors. He's a brilliant writer!

>Bob Geldof's show at the Filmore, in San Francisco,

Mike,

I, too, was fortunate enough to see the show at the Filmore--quite a remarkable coincidence since I live in N.C. but happened to be in SF for a conference. The Rats were the all-time favorite of my youth, though I never saw them (or Bob) live before Sunday. I had forgotten how much music used to mean to me until I saw the show. It rekindled some of the passion I used to have for music, and I can't stop playing my "Great Songs of Indifference" compilation that I bought on Monday.
I was blown away by how much energy Bob and the band put into the show. My only regret was that I had to return to my small town before finding the show in another venue. I will never forget that show. Two more regrets--no "Diamond Smiles" and the sparse turnout. I wish the word had gotten out about how good the show was; I'm sure no one left disappointed, but I'd bet that low ticket sales may make another tour unlikely.

Regards,
Chris
