It is not surprising that "Blue Velvet" is the last film that Ken Russell saw, before he created "Lair of the White Worm." There are so many similiarities between the two films.

Both deal with subject of erotica.

Both have the same storyline of something pretty sinister going on beneath the placid surface.

Both have snakes. Both actual (a snakedance) and symbolic (a writhing waterhose.)

Both have the same sets (minimalist for the most part), and are set in areas that are not moving forward. Indeed, the area of "Blue Velvet" seems to be in decline.

Both films have points in the plot, where a rape occurs. Not only the more usually seen of a man raping a woman, but the more unusual of a woman raping a man. And the equally unusual of a woman raping a woman.

And both films use music as a theme throughout the film. "Blue Velvet" uses "Blue Velvet," and "Lair of the White Worm" uses "The Lampton Worm."

To be continued . . .
