Mood. Both films feature a dark mood with much of both films taking place in the dark.

Lighting. Both directors know how to light a scene to enhance mood.

Heroes. Both heroes have a questionable sexuality. The hero in "Blue Velvet" is considered to be homosexual, but actually may be heterosexual. While the hero in "Lair of the White Worm" is considered to be heterosexual, but actually may be homosexual or at least bisexual.

Flashbacks. Both films use flashbacks to advance the story.

Double Entendres. Both scripts have double entendres in them

Criticism. Critic Roger Ebert hated both films.
