"The Story of Kevin's (Pitt's) Hat
From the inception of the British scout movement by Lord Baden-Powell to about 1969 the official headgear of the British scouts or boy scouts was what was known as the campaign hat here in the U.S., or what Kevin wears in the film. Unofficially, the beret was introduced about 1945 into the British scouting movement, about a decade after it was introduced into the British army. Gradually it came to replace the campaign hat, till about 1969, it became the official headgear of British scouts. While not official, it is more likely that Kevin would be wearing a beret with that uniform.

Officially known as the campaign hat, unofficially it was known as a lemon squeezer in the U.K. and a Smoky Bear in the U.S.

There has been some question to Kevin's age in the film. That might be decided by his garter tabs. As at some point in British scouting history scouts up to the age of 15 wore emerald green garter tabs, while scouts 16 to 18 wore maroon garter tabs and epaulettes. Thus, next time one watches the film notice the color of the garter tabs on the scout uniform, and the question to Kevin's age may be answered.

And for Laura, for some Scottish scouts, kilts were part of the scout uniform, which makes their uniform rather unique from most scout uniforms.
