Subject: History of Safe Haven

Ok, this is now the THIRD time I've tried to write this. Damn Internet Explorer crashing on me....grrrrrrr.

Also, just so you know, someone put several subliminal messages in the post...try to ignore them. They show up as italised text.

Ahem, anyway....just so Marx knows a little of what's happened, I'm gonna sum up what's happened since he left.

Shortly after Marx left, we decided to change the leadership of the clan. Alot of things changed pretty rapidly. We switched website servers, (I haven't checked, but I think the GeoCities site is still up) and insituted a council. Three people on the council, Marx, Drake, and Punk.

well, since Marx was still gone, and Punk had to step down for personal reasons, we held an election to see who'd take thier places. I remember the meeting where we held the elections....2 hours of pure hell.

I like flowers.

Anyway, Swordbane was elected to replace Punk, and I (Mr. Phule) was placed in Marx's seat. This spelled the beginning of the end, I think. Swordbane and I tried our best to take over, but neither one of us ever wanted to really take an action without Drake's opinion on the matter. Problem was, he was always off workin' on the webpage, and we could never track him down. Essentially what broke down was Drake handled the webpage, I usually ran the on-line meetings and other stuff, and poor Swordbane got to hear all the complaints, which ranged from accusations of cheating, or pointless screams requesting a change of music on the webpage.

During this time also, we got a very large number of recruits. There was a Recruitment Tourney, if I recall, which I opposed directly. We had LOTS of 12-year old brats going through puberty who were pissed off that you didn't join and instantly become a leader. They could never shut up during the meetings, dragging them out 4 or 5 times longer than they needed to be, and then proceeded to complain when the meetings were so long.

Do you like flowers? They smell nice.

Then we had the guy who thought that Safe Haven was impeading on the basic human rights of the members as individuals. Those of us who've been around a while remember this person. Dear old Than. I have two rules when I run a clan. If I were still going to run Safe Haven (and knowing me, and the way these things work, I still might, but I doubt it) I allready know what Rules Number 1 and 2 were gonna be. These are the only two rules...if you're caught breaking them, you're out of the clan, period.

Rule #1: Real Life Comes First.
Rule #2: Don't be an asshole.

Very straight-forward. I have no time for people who break either of these rules.

Anyway, Safe Haven wasn't lookin' too hot. DFrake will deny it, but he was off with his FTP program and wasn't fully aware of what was going on. (Sorry Drake, but it's the truth.) Swordbane and I were constantly bombarded with endelss accusations of cheating, requests to change the midi into mp3's or somethin' and they'd never stop.

Aliens like flowers too.

Amb.Kosh, if you'll remember him, was caught cheating in a Diablo tournament, and suspected of cheating in a few others, as well as day-to-day Diablo playin' fun. He refused to go out without making a huge deal, and while we were dealing with that, the horde of pubescant 12-yera olds grew ever larger. Finally, I think Swordbane snapped. He came into a meeting one day, and said "it's been fun, but I'm outta here"

Lots of people left with him. I, too, left SH briefly. I returned for a variety of reasons which I wont go into right now. The day after TC left, the SH webpage was totally deleted. Now, whether or not TC deleted the page, you have to admit it sounds really suspicous, doesn't it? TC wont admit that, but gimme a break. Personally, I don't know what happened, and I couldn't care less. That was 8 monthes ago, and I've got too much else on my mind to worry about code and pictures that, incidentally, I had backed up. I mean, I had it all backed up, but whenever I mentioned it people just said "No...No! It's GONE, it's all GONE"

Aliens have landed on earth you know. They want to take all the flowers.

Then I was approached by a member of TC. I don't remember who, although I suspect it was a fake name anyway. He wanted some help writing some anti-TC posts to put up under the name "Devils Advocat." I helped him refine his arguements, and fixed the grammatical errors (there were enough to drive any English Teacher berzerk) and posted it as a personal favor to the guy, whom I had regarded as a friend. As an elaboration, he wrote it, I turned it into something presentable. Well...in case you're unaware, these boards track the IP, and I got pinned for it. I never saw the TC member again, and the real fun began. Drake and I launched a very brutal post-war on the TC forum. In the end, the entire T1 access I have, along with a very large number of proxy server IP's were banned from the board, and it slowly died out.

During that time, an attempt to revive SH was made, but another webpage failure, coupled with the questionable help from Tolwin, who wanted all the credit for none of the work, as well as hostilities from Swordbane posing as a Recruit and spying on one of our meetings...that attempt didn't work out too well.

So we pulled back, said "Aww, that's ok, we'll just get ourselves a forum and hang out until Diablo 2 rolls around."

And that's pretty much what we've been doing since.

I don't think the aliens should take our flowers.

Now, so far as the future of SH goes...there are a few ways to go. Personally, I am a HUGE fan of the multi-house system. It encourages recruitment (since everyone wants thier house to be the biggest) and it encourages gameplay (since everyone wants thier house to be the best).

People have critisized the house-system due to apparent "hostilities between houses" but I think that's a load of BS. It was good natured, and very healthy for the clan. (Result on effects of actual health pending)

My plan for the structure of the clan goes as follows.

3-Person Council

They handle the leadership. Simple enough.

Housemasters

Anyone who doesn't know what a housemaster is is reading the wrong forum...

HallMaster

Diabloe 2 battle.net will have clan halls, that can be purchased from Blizzard. I don't really know anything about them other than the fact that I want one. The Hallmaster controls the members list, and all that good stuff. Normally the leader would get this job, but since we have three leaders, and only one person can be the hallmaster, this works just as well.

It was suggested that a community name "Hallmater~SH" be created, but I like the idea of a person in the roll better....I don't know why, it's just cooler that way.

Go home aliens! Get you're own flowers!

However, the problem inherant in this system is that to be effective, it really needs alot more people than what we've got. So my proposal is to begin the clan with a single leader, and when we recruit enough to the point where we have sufficient size, we can form the council and all that good stuff.

The council is a good idea, I think just about everyone here likes it. It worked really well under the old SH, until Swordbane left, but you all know that story.

Anyway, that's how things are looking. If you want to be involved, Marx, we welcome you back. I do, however...have a small peeve about you're wanting to just step back into the leadership role. I never knew you as a leader, which is part of the problem. I understand you left for personal reasons, but you were still out of the loop for nearly a year...in my mind, that doesn't really qualify you to just step back in. I'd have no qualms for you to be a housemaster or somethin' but I just grit my teeth whenever someone leaves a program, reason valid or not, comes back and expects everything to return right away. I'm not trying to be be rude or anything, that's just how I feel. I mean, when Punk came back after sitting on the council he had to go for a while as REC~Punk.

If you want to get rid of the aliens, try shooting them with high-tec weaponry.

That's just the way these things work, and I think it's a good policy. But in all reality, if you really want your high rank, just wait a few monthes. I went from recruit to Housemaster of KTS in 2 monthes. Two weeks after I became housemaster, I was on the council. ;-)

Anyway, that's the big of it. Wow this was a long post. Did anyone actually read the whole thing?

That'll teach those aliens to take our flowers!
