Date Posted: 14:14:51 11/08/02 Fri Alli grabbed a lead rope and walked out to get Witch. From somewhere out in the other mare paddock, Alli heard a sharp whinny. It was Feather. She jogged over to the paddock and saw Feather, prancing nervously around, obviously limping. She opened the gate and the mare galloped to her, hardly putting any weight on her right hind. Alli grimaced and led the mare to the barn. She put the Arab in her large stall and called the house. “Mom? Feather is lame and I need you to come check it out.” Alli said, as soon as she heard her mom’s voice. A few minute later, Susan was down at the barn. “Shhhh, sweetheart. We just taking a good look at your leg.” Susan cooed to the mare, Feather relaxed under the experienced touch. Susan put a hosing boot on the mare. “Just keep an eye on her. It seems to be pretty minor. There is a kick mark, but, like I said, just keep an eye on her.” Susan said, smiling. Alli nodded and gave Feather a carrot. She walked back out to the paddock to get Witch. The pretty bay TB cantered up to her and Alli rubbed the mare gently. She led her to the barn and got out her 3 day eventing gear. She quickly tacked Witch up and led her to the arena. She put her through some basic warm up and then hit the trails. Alli smiled contentedly and laid her cheek against Witch’s silky black mane. When they reached the XC course, Alli squeezed firmly. Witch cantered energetically forward and headed for the first jump, a hanging log. The mare snorted and leapt over the log like a deer. Alli grinned and gripped the reins firmly in her fingers. She confidently guided the mare through the next few jumps. Witch cantered smoothly towards the ski jump. Alli moved into her jumping saddle as the TB bunched her hindquarters and soared over the jump, landing in the water. They splashed through it and Alli grinned happily. The pair finished the test and Alli rode over to the meadow. The trimmed grass and huge 4 square mile meadow had wonderful rolling hills, perfect for galloping. Alli loosened the reins and squeezed firmly. Witch stretched out her head and neck and set out in a fast smooth gallop. They pounded up and down the rolling hills. Alli perched lightly over the mare’s withers and kneaded her hands up her neck, asking for more speed. Witch easily had it and the TB ripped along, tearing up the turf. After a minute, Alli squeezed the reins and stood in her stirrups. Witch reluctantly dropped to a canter and then a trot. The pair rode back to the barn on a loose rein, smiling happily :-) [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |
