Date Posted: 14:17:23 12/23/02 Mon Laura walked into the barn and slid open JJ’s stall door. The pony snorted grumpily at her and she smiled. “I know. I know. You feel neglected. I’m sorry that I have been spending a lot of time with Toffee.” She said, patting his sleek brown neck. He whinnied haughtily as she led him to the wash stall and hooked him in crossties. She rinsed the dirt off his silky coat and then mixed some shampoo into a bucket of water. She took a sponge and lathered up the pony’s body. JJ sucked eagerly on the hose. “JJ, give me that!” The teen laughed, wrestling it from him. He threw his head as she rinsed the soap off of him. After his bath was finished, Laura toweled him off and threw his blanket on him. “We’ll be ready for the show tomorrow, right baby?” Laura said, patting the gelding gently before heading to the house. THE NEXT MORNING… Laura scooped out a cup of pellets into Cobalt’s bucket. “Finished feeding.” She sighed, opening JJ’s stall. After putting on his traveling gear, Laura led the pony to the trailer. He trotted eagerly up the ramp. Laura lifted the ramp up and then whistled. Her border collie, Rogue, ran over, barking excitedly. “JACOB!” Laura called, looking for her boyfriend. The just turned 18 y/o jogged over and gave her a kiss. He jumped in the truck and she & Rogue followed. Jacob drove the trailer towards Eden Stables. “So, Laura, after the show what do you say about us going out to dinner to celebrate?” He asked, grinning. “Sure, but what are we celebrating?” Laura replied, turning up one of her favorite songs, Who’s Your Daddy?, on the radio. “You winning the blue ribbon, of course.” Jacob laughed. Laura hit him playfully as they pulled in at Eden Stables. They parked and unloaded JJ. The playful gelding pranced around as Laura tied him to the trailer. She sat down beside her gelding and Rogue plopped down on top of her. She laughed and waited for her class. After about an half an hour, she walked into the trailer and changed into her show outfit. Her tall boots and elegant black outfit made her seem perfect for the show ring. She stepped out and Jacob whistled appreciatively. “Hush!” she joked, taking JJ’s reins from her boyfriend. “Thanks for tacking him up.” She said, giving Jacob a kiss. She swung into the saddle and headed for the warm up ring. Adults on their warmbloods and thoroughbreds were warming up for the show jumping class which she and JJ were competing in. She felt a flutter of nervousness. What if she and her beloved pony lost? Suddenly, a woman passed on a tall Swedish Warmblood. “You’re actually going against us on that pony?” She sneered. “Absolutely.” Laura said curtly, urging JJ into a trot. They performed a stunning warm up and JJ took the warm up fence with ease. She halted him and watched the first few rides. The loud speaker blared, “ Now, we have Laura Riley on Joey Jenkins, a TB/Welsh cross.” The voice seemed very skeptical about them. “Let’s do it!” Laura whispered to JJ as they rode into the ring. Laura pushed him through a courtesy circle. They cantered towards the first fence, a 4’ spread. They soared over it with perfect style! You could have heard a pin drop as they rode through the course. After they finished, Laura and JJ rode out of the ring. Jacob ran over and pulled her off her pony, hugging her. “You got an awesome time!” He said, grinning. They untacked the gelding and put a yellow & green GRF show cooler on him. He pranced eagerly beneath the cooler and began to graze. After all the classes were over, the award ceremony began, Laura waited to hear the voice announce the 4’ jumping class. “In first place for the 4’ jumping class, we have the surprising winner, Laura Riley and Joey Jenkins.” The announcer remarked. Laura gasped and quickly untied JJ, from the trailer. She jogged with him to the arena and led him over to collect her ribbon. “These two did an amazing job!” The judge said, smiling and handing them the blue ribbon. Laura and JJ walked proudly out of the ring. “You showed em’, baby.” She cooed. Jacob gave her a hug and a kiss. “Good job!” He said. She changed back into her jeans and ‘Barn Goddess’ shirt before loading JJ. She and Jacob drove back to the barn and took care of JJ.
