Date Posted: 20:12:25 12/21/02 Sat I hoped in the SUV and drove down to Saddle's new farm. When i got there i parked the SUV and hoped out and zipped up my jacket. I was shivering cause i was in breeches and my tall black boots. I walked to the barn where Kelsey was getting Just Victory ready. "Hey Kelsey." "Hey Shayla!" "Ok first things first none of that Shayla crap just call me Shay ok?" "Ok" "So can you tack him up while i go and set up the jumps?" "Ya sure" I walked out to the indoor arena and started to set up the jumps. I set 3 jumps up in a "S" pattern. Then i set the bars at 2ft. Then i went back to get Kelsey and Tori.... Kelsey's Lesson "Ok Kelsey make sure that girth is tight cause your mom said he can be a real hot head." "Ok" She checked the girth which was nice and tight and put on her helmet. Then she checked the sturrip length and swung into the saddle. "Ok now start to walk him around for a bit and i will tell you when to trot." She gave only the slightest squezze and Tori moved out. I walked to the center of the ring and watched how they were moving at the walk. "Ok Kelsey make sure that your body is in a straight line from ear to heel." She fixed her postion and after Tori had stopped fighting her and settled down to a nice calm walk i said, "Ok lets try a trot. But if he starts fighting i want you to pull him back down to a walk straight away then try the trot again after one lap of the arena." She nodded her head. He broke into a jig and she immidiatly pulled him back down to a walk and walked another lap before pushing him back into the trot. This time she got him going at a nice pace. "Ok that is a nice trot." "Thanks!" "Ok post 2 laps and sit 2." "Ok" She posted for 2 laps then sat for 2 her seat perfect the whole time. "OK Kelsey canter." Now that Tori had settled down he cantered perfectly. After a few laps i told her to bring him over to me. "Ok we are going to try those jumps in the "S" shape. They are all set at 2ft." "Ok" "Now i want you to try them right now k. Just twice should be enough for the lesson. He is already breathing heavily." "Ok" She turned him and troted off and then set him up perfectly for the jumps. But instead of going over them nicely he rushed through them and knocking them all down. "Ok new diversion tactics." I said,"Ok when you hit the jump. If his head goes up and you feel him speeding up then turn him right in front of the jump and do a circle. Do it as many times as nessicery till he goes over them nicely." "Ok" She set off at a trot again and went around the arena a few times while i fixed the jumps. After i had fixed them she took him over again. She had to circle him 5 times before he went over nicely. "Ok that's a wrap." I called out. "Bring him over here and lets talk about the lesson." "Ok" Kelsey brought him over and i held his reins while i talked to her. "Ok that was a beautiful lesson. I love your riding style. If you work hard at it you could hit it big time in the showjumping or eventing world." Kelsey beamed at the praise. "Thanks!" she replied. "Ok now until the next time i see you i want you to keep jumping him at 2ft and under till he jumps them calmly. Once he jumps them calmly you can start jumping him higher. But no higher then 2ft till he is calm or else he is going to learn that he can rush the jumps and get away with it." "Ok" she replied. "But other then that it was a GREAT lesson." "Thanks!" "OK now go untack him and give him a good grooming. I will see you next week." "Ok bye Shay." "Bye Kelsey."
