A militant early Civil Rights Song

[Refers to RUC attack on CR demo on Oct. 5th. 1968]

The Battle of Derry [Author unknown]

We gathered that day
On the streets of old Derry
Shoulder to shoulder,
We manfully stood,
Then came from the lips
Of our brave leader Gerry,
“Our protest to-day
Will be peaceful and good”.

CHORUS

WE’LL FIGHT IN THE DIAMOND,
WE’LL FIGHT IN OLD BOGSIDE,
Our limbs may be broken,
Our blood freely flow,
For no one can stop us,
Nor shackle the floodtide,
As onwards to Justice
And Freedom, we’ll go

Ten yards from our ranks
Stood the black-coated bullies,
Their truncheons held high
And their eyes full of hate
“Go back to your ghettoes,
Your hovels, your gullies,
For we won’t let you pass
Through your own city gates”.

“We’ll do you no harm”,
Cried our brave leader Gerry,
“We beg you in God’s name
Come with us today,
Come march through the streets
Of our own city Derry,
Come join in our plea,
For mere Justice we pray”.

“We’ll give you mere Justice
You green Fenian bastard,
We’ll give you our truncheons
We’ll scatter your blood”.
Their weapons swung out,
With the skills they had mastered
And Gerry fell down with a
Moan and a thud.

NOT WOMEN NOR CHILDREN
Were safe from their beating,
Nor cripples, nor pressmen,
Nor by-standers too.
We saw all the blood and
We heard all the bleating,
We cried out, “Oh! God.
Tell us what we can do.”

And up rose a shout,
From the throats of the people,
“This day we’ll remember,
With great pride and joy”.
Cry out from our walls,
And cry out from our steeples,
We’ll fight for our rights,
‘Till the last man and boy.

REPEAT CHORUS

This song was published in REALITY No. 7, which then cost one shilling. It contained several interesting photographs and was the official organ of the Derry Housing Action Committee. This issue appeared in the summer of 1969. Photo-copies can be arranged via
