PEACE GATHERING on DECEMBER 18, 2002

"You must be the change you wish to see in the world." Mahatma Ghandi

The time has come for us to join together to express our solidarity for the
cause of peace.

More than 250 students from several universities in Lebanon have come
together because we believe that people living in the Middle East and North
Africa have suffered for far too long from aggression and war.

We call on every man, woman and child who believes in the basic right for
all human beings to live and develop in an atmosphere free from injustice
and the misery of war to unite with us on December 18, 2002 at 7:00pm local
time in Beirut, Lebanon by lighting a white candle for peace.

Where, When and What to do

For people living in Lebanon, we ask that you meet at Martyr’s Square at
6:45 pm and walk with us to the Clock Tower in the City Center, where we
will sit together. Please bring a white burning candle; which is a symbol of
hope for peace.

For people living in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa,
Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia we ask that you gather together peacefully
in your City Center, Corniche or other public place. If you are unable to go
to a public place due to weather or security considerations, we ask that you
show your support by placing a burning white candle outside near your home,
office or apartment building; or clearly visible near a window. Please see
time schedule listed below.

For any questions: Email: Christine Crumrine, Lecturer at AUB:
ch03@aub.edu.lb or telephone at 961-3-350344

"I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the
starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and
brotherhood can never become a reality. I believe that unarmed truth and
unconditional love will have the final word." Martin Luther King Jr.

"Immense military and economic power are no guarantee of wisdom or moral
vision…We need to step back from the imaginary thresholds that separate
people from each other and re-examine the labels, reconsider the limited
resources available, decide to share our fates with each other as cultures
mostly have done, despite the bellicose cries and creeds…It takes patience
and education, but it is worth the investment than still greater levels of
large-scale violence and suffering." Edward Said

"I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to
promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace
so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and
let them have it." Dwight D. Eisenhower

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change
the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." Margaret Mead

Dear All,

Please forward this email to every person that you know so that we can work
towards generating hope for peace in our region. If you are willing and
motivated to work as a co-ordinator in your village, city, office or
university we would really appreciate your effort!!!
