Subject: the other way around (kinda long) (animatrix spoilers as well)
In reply to: Zandozan 's message, "Is Neo really human?" on 20:51:12 06/14/03 Sat

First, i want to say that i find your topic interesting because it brings attention to the assumptions we have made and the 'theories' we have developed here in this forum. I have a tough time believing that neo and the gang are not human because i just don't see the movie working that way. Seems like it would destroy the way the audience identifies with the heros and humanity. Maybe my imagination is nowhere near that of the W. Bros--maybe i'm just in denial--unable to accept that there is nothing uniquely endowed to humanity, such as a soul or spirit.
This brings me to my point.

I think that it's the other way around from your idea. I think Neo IS human. Now, between Neo-the-program becoming more human and Neo-the-human becoming more machine, i can say with more confidence that the latter case is more likely. I believe this because i've watched the Animatrix, and i've seen just how superior these machines are. Please bear with me.

In the Renaissane I, it is said that the machines were endowed with the very spirit of man. However, in this episode, we also learn that the machines, as human as they looked with their false flesh and as human as they sounded when they begged for their lives, were not treated as equal to humans. When the first robot that killed his owner was ordered to be terminated along with all of his kind, the narrator said that 'rational voices' dissented (referring to the humans). I infered from this episode that it was the humans who were in the wrong--it was the humans who were 'flawed.' The rebel robot testified that he 'simply did not want to die.' O.k....on to Renaissance II.

In Ren.II we see that the surviving machines fled to modern day 'Iraq' to build their own civilization. They eventually created more advanced AI, and it is said that their inventions could be seen in every facet of humans life. In a large sense, the AI increasingly did the thinking for the humans--even after they had set up their own civilization. Also, i forget in which episode it is in, it was the machines (i really hate to call them that. i see them as people that look like machines) who came up with a peace plan for coexistence and presented it to the UN. It was the UN who rejected it (granted, we really don't know what was in the plan, but i assume it was a damn good one--one without a matrix prison). I believe it was the humans who acted inhumanely and the humans who acted irrationally and uncompassionately. From the beginning, the humans did not understand that it was not the machines who were their enemy--it was themselves.

I think i've forgotten something..oh well. To sum up, i believe that the AI are of a superior intellect and moral consciousness than that of the human race. I believe it would make more sense in this case to make humans more like machines. Forget what you denotatively and connotatively consider be a machine. These machines are superior humans without the flesh. but maybe there IS something that is uniquely endowed to the human race--something that the 'machines' can never have--and that is why Neo needs to become a fully mature cyborg (i'm laughing at myself).

thanks for reading this. I hope you havent wasted your time.
