Subject: Networked brains

It seems an awful waste of resources to me to harvest humans just for their energy. It seems much more efficient for the machines to have linked the humans' brains together into a neural net of some sort. This network would then form both the home for the sentient programs and the Matrix 9with a pretty hefty firewall betweeen the two of course.

Also, what are the machines doing outside the Matrix? Surely watching human beings live out their lives is not their main preoccupation. I don't spend a lot of time looking at my batteries. Are they exploring space? Are they cleaning the blackened sky? why don't they launch a satellite to collect solar energy?
