I read that the W. Bros originally had the machines using the humans' brains for computing power, but this idea was deemed too comlicated by movie execs. So, to get the movie made, the W. Brothers changed the humans into batteries. Yes, when you think about the obvious alternatives to getting power, in either scenario (batteries or neural network) the question is why? I think this hints to a greater reason for humans to exist other than for energy. I think we will discover that there is a primary reason for keeping humans alive. The secondary reason is to get energy.

Yes..what are the machines doing? Some of them are surely there to maintain the human crops (plug in babies, unplug dead bodies, etc.) Of course, many are preparing for war with the people of Zion, but what were the variety of machines doing on Earth while humans are plugged in? I suppose they must be doing something in order for them to need human batteries.
