In Layman terms... the architect said that there were 5 other "THE ONES". Therefore, there was 5 other matrixes before this one. Each matrix had its own problems.(You can see pictures like Adolf Hitler and that era of destruction in the background).

Now here is the hard part to understand....
The first matrix was perfect, no wars, no pain and everyone was happy...but no one accepted it so there were alot who were waking up. So, the architect(FATHER of the matrix) created the MOTHER of the matrix(we dont' know who the mother is though), but she interacted with the people to get what the architect needed to create the PERFECT simulation of the REAL world.
Nonetheless,
the matrix is still flawed because its ONLY 99% effective, that is, only 99% of the population will accept the matrix. The 1% that won't accept it, will wake up. The 1% that woke up will go to Zion. This is all because of CHOICE which is given to the people.

Basically, what the architect was saying is that its a balance... If the Matrix exists, then so does Zion.
So you might be asking yourself, why are they sending the sentinels to destroy Zion if the existence of the matrix is dependent upon the existence of Zion.
Well, its like pest control... they see the growth of Zion as a threat to their own existence so they need to destroy it.
Furthermore, the architect said that the PURPOSE of the one is to go back to the source... that is... to get reinstalled into the matrix and when NEO gets unplugged(wakes) from the matrix AGAIN... he will have to take 7 men and 16 women which is a total of 23 people to reconstruct/rebuild Zion.
Failure to comply will result in the total annihilation of the human race.
Then Neo replies that if the human race dies so does the machine race. The architect agrees and says that there are some sacrifices of survival they are willing to take.
And, even still he gives Neo a CHOICE of whether he wants to go the source to save the human race or to go back to the matrix to save trinity and watch the end of the human race.

You can see that if there were 5 other matrixes and 5 other "THE ONES". Then the 5 other "THE ONES" must have chosen the SOURCE. And, NEO just ended that loop, where THE ONE is put back in the matrix and the reconstruction of Zion(this never ending loop just ended).

The ROLE of the Architect is probably like GOD in our reality... He practically has control cause he created the matrix but still he gives the power of CHOICE.
