I don't know if it is any help, but you might find some great inspiration searching at ebay.com for Medieval Jewelry. I know they often have authentic artifacts and a whole slew of 'reproductions' for sale, and maybe something there might spark your imagination?

Also, here are some great sites with research/papers/info from societies and academic groups studying Medieval metallurgy:

THE ANCIENT METALLURGY RESEARCH GROUP
http://www.bradford.ac.uk/acad/archsci/depart/resgrp/amrg/amrginfo.htm

THE COSTUMER'S MANIFESTO
http://www.costumes.org/pages/frankishjewel.htm

The former is a collection of research papers and academic information on Ancient/Medieval metallurgy techniques, and there seems to be a good bit there specifically on the making of jewelry.

The latter is a great page I ran across that has detailed sketches of jewelry from Celtic England, Ireland and France, from Frankish, Burgundian, and Merovingian dynasties, and even some Visigothic jewelry from Spain.

But in any event, I hope some of this proves of use to you!
