Kirby, Zach, thanks for the question and comments. We have 3 women in our Medieval class but mostly men as you can tell from the list with e-mails posted by Dr. Wineland. Some of the most famous Medieval historians and writers have been women and more women are getting involved in history in general than in prior years -- perhaps we are a bit behind at Lee. We only have one woman faculty member in history at Lee. Sometimes female students relate better to women professors and so with mostly male professors in history at Lee in general, it is possible that indirectly more men may be influenced to history as a major or career than women. Certainly this isn't a universal rule. For example, Dr. Wineland and I have had more women than men go on our two previous trips to the Middle East -- and it seemed like they both enjoyed and learned from the experiences every bit as much or more than the men.

None of the above is meant to be a thorough or technical answer to your question. Sociologists and others study such gender disparities as those you note all the time and could have written something specific on your particular question. I'll check with our Soc. WOMAN professor and try to find out.

Thanks for writing!
