Subject: Kaleidoscope Notes

I thought that one of the excerpts from "Kaleidoscope Notes" was very interesting and relevant to all we have been talking about as far back as Goffman. This is on page 122-123: "Performance provides a medium through which participants embody these selves, identities, potentials, and values, using music to illustrate and interrogate the existing social order." Prior to this statement, Jones talks about "redefining self, creaing opportunities for new identities and social potentials, and portraying an alternative set of values." I think this is important in understanding the theories surrounding self and identity. These statements are saying that we are not stuck in the selves and identities we have constructed for ourselves. If we continue to grow and "redefine" our self we can continue to shape our identities and potentials.
