I feel that your observation of Maroon 5 is rather accurate. When Maroon 5 was not "Maroon 5" they played music that would be considered more alternative or grunge. They soon realized that this music was not earning them the success that they desired because their album under the title "Kara's Flowers" miserabley failed. Although this CD was created early in their career, it was made to grasp fame. This is proven witht the fact that they were being produced by hit maker Rob Cavallo (Michell Branch, Goo Goo Dolls, Green Day's "Dookie").
They realized that their sound was not earning them success so they completely changed their sound to that of a more poppy nature. Along with this they changed their name to Maroon 5 because of an added 5th memeber of the band (pretty creative, huh?). As a result they are platinum and were nominated for a grammy for Best POP album. Along with this they are earning high revenue for selling songs to advertisements and the Spiderman soundtrack.
Had they stuck with their original sound (before producers), rather then finding one for success, Maroon 5 may have some legitimacy. Yet it is quite apparent that their main goal has been fame.
