Unlike Trinindad, I never had a hard time believing what Goffman was saying about everyone performing roles; I had just never stopped to think about it. It took the Goffman reading for me to realize that I play a different role as a student, as an employee, as a friend, as a girlfriend, and as a daughter. I agree with Trinidad that these are not roles that we mentally rehearse for, unlike an actor who does rehearse for his/her role. I act differently with my friends and my boyfriend than I do with my family. When Goffman told the story about the sailor who came home from being on a ship and asked his mother to pass the f---ing butter, I had to laugh to myself because it made me think of a time when I did something similar. I used the "f" word in front of my mother and she was furious! The reading made me realize that when I said that word in front of my mother that time I forgot which role I was in and it accidentally slipped out. I am now much more cognisent of which role I am playing and when I am playing it. It just so happened that before the reading I wasn't thinking of it as a role, and now I do.
