I was struggling to find a definition of Women's music that I could relate with even after reading the Jones book. I found a quote at the end of her book, that after analyzing it, made me realize what it does mean to me. I shared this quote with my journal group and I thought I would share it with everyone: the author quotes her Rhizomatic character saying, my music “resists a singular rhythmic pattern and sensibility. Music that is polyrhythmic and incomplete. Music that requires the listener, the dancer, to complete the rhythm.” Later he also states that: “My music produces multiple, contradictory, and unsteady rhythms. It resists static interpretation, renders me incapable of creating the music alone. It’s the same for women’s music, and for her, for this work.” At first I thought Women's music was music written by women, for women and about women. But then I realized that it can be more than that. I think it can be for and by men as well as women. I think women's music is music that the listener interacts with and gets a message out of. Without the listener, it wouldn't be women's music.
