I agree and also disagree with Goffman on taking on roles, and being felt as if you are being watched even when alone. When I am hiking, rafting, climbing or any other outdoor activity where i am alone in the wilderness, I do not feel as if I am being watched or taking on a role. But when in a public restroom performing my business, whether alone or not i feel as if I am being watched and definitely put on a role. So i think it depends on the situatuin you are in.
