The question of agency is a hard one to answer, especially as sociology's. If you believe that everything is influenced by society (i.e. social interaction, socialization, etc.) then it can be very disempowering to those that act outside of the norm. The power of individual agency is a powerful tool in creating change, including in music. I think that there is a certain amount of agency in everything we do, while it might be influenced by social forces it is important to recognize that it exists. I am reminded of Martin's discussion of punk on page 252, the punk movement was a reaction to mainstream culture and it took a lot of individual agency for that movement to develop. While the punk movement happened within a social context, if those individuals were not passionate about what they were doing the movement would of never happened.
