I haven't read the book of which you are speaking, but I have an idea about that quote. Marriage, when boiled down to its rawest form, is a promise to remain in strict relations with each other. You promise not to engage in strict relations with another. One does this because they feel that they have encountered that which fulfills certian needs, unique to each person, than cannot be met by any other person.

The trickery here is that the vows are easily retreated upon. One can change their mind if they find another that fulfills such needs.

The world, that is their universe, is theirs. It cannot be traded in or worne listless. One has married that which they hold as their own. Thus the definition of marriage.
