I see a wedding as a ceremony uniting two people pledging to share the rest of their lives/combined roles together. A wedding is a type of performance - as the bride, groom and remaining wedding party put on a performance for an audience - parents, friends, and relatives. All members of the wedding party and preacher/priest/judge have assigned roles to perform at predetermined times. The audience also has an expected role - their behavior - quiet, attentive, each sitting in their appropriate section or seat. I think Goffamn would say that the wedding itself is just a performance and in itself does not say a lot about how the couple feel about each other - they wouldn't be getting married if we couldn't assume that they love each other. This seems like a harsh view of a wedding, but I believe this is what Goffman might be thinking when he compares the world to a wedding.

Thinking about roles, I have to hope that we choose/assume roles that we will enjoy and a wedding would be one of those occasions/performances.
