I agree with you that when I am alone I am not performing for an audience - just for myself. I can see Goffman's point of view also. When I am alone I feel as though there are always things/committments that I should be doing, the phone rings, the radio or tv may be on, someone comes to the door, you hear noises outside - and these disruptions don't allow me to relax and think of only myself as my only audience. I guess what I'm saying is I am beginning to think that we always have an audience whether there are actually physical people present or not.
