I believe that authenticity and the act of being true to one's real self are two different topics. Although one's self can be introduced as the authentic and raw person, it is also known to be the person that you have become. By becoming another person, others' performances have influenced you; moreover, you have chosen to recognize them and anaylyze them through a means of application into your own psyche. I agree that this topic can go around in circles, yet I don't think that the authentic self is necessarily what one trys to stay true to. I think that when a person is content with the way their performance is going, whether because of comfort or attention - it is irrelevant, they want to keep that and so they try to stay "true" to it. Furthermore, the authentic self is more of a mysterious persona in which your first morals and performances have been inscribed to. So, I guess one may be able to stay true to their authentic self, although I have not met one person that has refused to conform to some outside influence of performance.
