I agree with Rett in that I found Goffman's statements hard to believe when talking about human roles when they are alone. I do not think that we act out roles when we are alone. I believe that I am my "true self" when I am alone because I am not putting on a performance. The reason I don't think that I am putting on a performance is because I do not have a front stage or a back stage when I am alone since there is no audience. If there is no audience then how could i possibly be playing a role? Even if I am doing things that prepare myself to be presented for a future role (such as painting my nails) I dont think it should be considered a role itself. Perhaps there should be another name for it, even calling it preparing for a role would make more sense to me.
