When I read this discussion, I agreed and disagreed. I feel as though people can be pushed to be something they are not and in this state the person is confused about their identity and is playing a role based on what they think is correct or what they really want. In this situation, a person can feel become lost and unhappy to the point they do not know what to do. This is when someone can become deeply depressed and alone without any resources. I believe that when a person has hit rock bottom, there are two choices; kill themselves or turn around and figure out what really makes them happy. It is not until the person is truely secure with themselves when they are not playing a role rather then being themselves. On a smaller scale, I believe that people are not playing a role when they are confortable with their surrounding and more so their companion. Some situations may lead someone to deviate from their identity to get what they want or need. It is hard to say that people are always real or always fake because people go through periods of both and it is the self that can distinguish between the two.
