Subject: Montreal's Quiet Off-Season

Montreal, PQ - With plenty of upheaval in the last season and a half, the Montreal Marauders are enjoying a quiet off-season. GM Sean Gallagher finally seems content with his monster.

"I feel like I've made the imnprint on this team that I wanted," said Gallagher from his off-season vacation spot...his office, "so now we can tweak the team rather than overhaul."

The Marauders have morphed from a dead-last team of not-readys and over-the-hills to a team that looks poised to compete this year. The transition occured faster than anyone expected.

"I'd asked our loyal fans to be patient with the rebuild," said Gallagher, "but now, season ticket renewals have been at record levels, despite a price increase.

"It's the addition of the impact players like Brendan Shanahan and Todd Bertuzzi that have people excited. Additionally, this will be the first good look that people get of Brad Richards and Patrick Marleau. We're all very excited."

The Marauders off-season has been highlighted by the drafting of Maxime Ouellette and Scottie Upshall at the entry draft. Both have the ability to make the big team in the next few years, with Ouellette especially prized by the franchise, which has described the young netminder as "big time". Upshall has the potential to become a great leader and player, if not the gaudy scorer he was in junior.

Free agency looms for the Marauders, but looks unlikely to have a big impact on the squad. The only high-profile player available is Steve Sullivan, and management has hinted that he has been re-signed as the team's 'Franchise' player this year. Montreal's GM has a reputation for eshewing the free agent market, preferring to build his team rather than, as he says, "overpaying for it".

"We're busy, that's for sure, but it's mostly internal stuff," reported Gallagher, "re-signing our own guys and getting ready for the next year. I don't see any big transactions coming anytime soon, but you never know."
