A somewhat busy off-season continued for the Saskatoon Silos, with the team announcing the signing of two veteran free agents. Both signings addressed a need in the organization, on the wing and in goal.

To shore up some depth problems on the right side, the Silos inked Ulf Dahlen to a 4-year deal. The 36-year-old Swede is expected to bring a little offensive punch to the forward unit, effectively taking the place of the departed Theo Fleury.

Silos GM Ken McKenna also signed a veteran to backup starting goaltender Tommy Salo. Arturs Irbe will most likely handle the understudy's role for 10-15 games, but Salo is expected to handle most of the load this coming season.

Silos head coach Bob Hartley seemed pleased with the addition of a couple of greybeards.

"It's always good to have some veteran leadership on a club," said Hartley. "We have a fairly young squad, so players like Dahlen and Irbe should help to bring the younger players along."

Silo Siftings: with the loss of free agents Fleury and Dwayne Roloson, the Silos will have a couple extra draft picks in the next GWHL Entry Draft. For Fleury, the Silos received a pick between the 2nd and 3rd rounds, and for Roloson the club received a pick after the third round. This leaves the team with five picks in the 2006 draft.
