[Saskatoon, SK] - From worst to first, for now, at least.
That is where the Saskatoon Silos find themselves after a 3-0-0 start to the 2005 GWHL season. This, following a dreadful preseason that saw the club win just one game.
The secret to the club's success is not a secret at all, though. Goaltender Tommy Salo has been sensational in his three starts, including a 34-save performance in today's 3-1 victory over visiting B.C. Salo has so far stoned three excellent offensive teams in the Huskies, Halifax and Whitehorse, leaving the club with just 4 goals-against in three games.
Offensively, the club has struggled as expected, but it has been good enough to win games. The scoring has been evenly distributed, with four players tied for the team points lead with 3 points each.
Silos head coach Bob Hartley has been pleasantly surprised by the fast start, but appears to be taking things in stride.
"It's been a great start," acknowledged Hartley, "but we aren't necessarily playing great hockey. Tommy has kept us in each game, and we've had different players step up each night on offense. I'm pleased, but I realize that it won't last forever. We'll see how we do when adversity strikes."
Hartley has used seven rookies in the past two games, calling up winger Arron Asham following an injury to Mike LeClerc.
"Young guys like Nick Schultz and Alex Frolov have chipped in," said Hartley of a couple of his younger troops, "so that enthusiasm has spread to other players on the club."
The Silos will hit the road for the first time as they head to Hamilton to face the Hammers, then they face the defending Hoser Cup champs from Yellowknife in another home contest.
