Montreal, PQ - After months of inconsistency, the talented and frustrating Montreal Marauders finally put together a winning streak. Luckily for the team, it coincided with uncharacteristic slumps from the two teams it has been chasing all along.
The result is that they are fianlly in a playoff position, precarious as it may be.
"We can't get too confident," said the dour John Tortorella, "we've played well lately, but we'll need to get better."
Recent trade rumors seemed to have sparked the team, as several defensement have improved their plus/minus ratings as certain forwards have started to shine. Most importantly, however, has been the resurgence of goalie Evgeni Nabokov. Though never directly blamed for the team's struggles, Nabokov clearly felt the pressure.
"We have so many players with good scoring seasons and yet we kept losing," said Nabokov, "I needed to step up."
The Marauders have had a hard time in trade talks, but may look to a burgeoning farm club for help.
"Some of our youngsters have really been improving in the minors," said GM Gallagher, "some will probably get a look at some GWHL ice time in the coming weeks. Antropov played well up here, so he may get another dance. Vrbata has turned some heads among the staff and may get a look."
Asked about Paul Kariya, who is also in the minors, Gallagher replied, "he's not a youngster."
With most of the season behind them, it's becoming more and more likely that another team will show interest in the star winger, though Gallagher seems pessimistic.
"He'll probably be a free agent this summer. Maybe we'll get some compensation for him."
The Marauders next games are all against critical competition - the teams directly above and below them in the standings. Good seats are still avilable for most home games.
