Montreal, PQ - With just 21 days left until the GWHL trade deadline, the surging Montreal Marauders have a much shorter shopping list than they had just two months ago. Since their GM started threatening to trade core players, the team held several players-only meetings, and have pushed into the playoff race.

"Well, with the way we're playing, it's hard to consider trading any of our key guys now," said GM Gallagher recently, "they've proven what I asked them to prove - that they can win with the group they have together. Now I'm looking to see if there's any way I can help them reach their collective goals."

Without getting specific, Gallagher hinted that he's still quietly searching for a shutdown defenseman to add to the lineup. Common reasoning from his past history also indicates that he'd take on impact veterans with good contracts or short contracts if they can impact the top two scoring lines.

The team has a plethora of defensemen who can be moved, as well as a couple players on the farm. Though the man they want to move the most they will not name. Paul Kariya has been the goat of this squad since training camp and his embarassing demotion to the farm club has left both sides raw. With Kariya's salary almost paid for the year, and his contract up at the end of the season, it's either generate a trade now or pray to leave via free agency this summer.

Reached via cellphone on the farm team's bus, Kariya made only one comment for the media:

"I will go anywhere as long as it gets me back to the GWHL. Someone save me."

It looks like he's got 21 days left to catch a lifeline.
