After an abysmal first half of the season that saw the Yellowknife Blades out of the playoff picture and playing .500 hockey, GM Neil Hayes was about to dismantle the team that won the Hoser Cup the previous season. Rumors were abound that key players such as Naslund and Modano may be moved to shake the team up.

Hayes held off, believing in this group, and it has paid off. Over the last 30 games, the Blades are 20-6-4 and now not only find themselves in a playoff spot with a dozen games left, but they are contending for first place in the conference.

Deadline acquisition Mattias Weinhandl has fit in nicely on a line with Modano and Naslund, contributing 5 goals and 2 assists with a +3 rating in 6 games, and the second unit of Lecavalier, Kovalev and York has been just as dominant.

With the playoffs just around the corner, people in Yellowknife are starting to whisper that this team might just have the chance to be the first team in GWHL history to repeat as Hoser Cup champions.

But they will certainly have some tough competition. The Winnipeg Wolves are also on a late season tear, currently unbeaten in 10, Victoria has been a strong team all season long, and Calgary has won 6 straight. With Edmonton and Whitehorse also sporting strong teams, this years playoffs are anyones guess. But the Blades after this impressive win streak can certainly be now considered strong contenders.
