The Blades have officially clinched their first ever conference after a remarkable second half. The first half of the season saw the Blades fighting for their playoff lives with a record of 20-19-2. Since then, the Blades have gone 27-6-4.

"Jacques Martin deserves alot of credit" commented GM Neil Hayes. "He mixed with the lineups and finally found the right combinations."

Martin has also had help from his players, especially MVP candidate Vincent Lecavalier. Lecavalier is leading the GWHL in assists and points and just recently had a 17 game point streak snapped.

But Lecavalier hasn't been the only offensive force. Mike Modano, Mike York and Alexei Kovalev all find themselves in the top 10 scoring leaders.

With the playoff race extremely tight this year, the Blades will most likely not know their first round opponent until the last game of the year. Edmonton, Calgary and Whitehorse are all fighting for the one remaining spot.

With two of Yellowknife's final four games against Whitehorse, don't expect the Blades to let the big guns rest.

The Edmonton Eagles are desperately trying to make the playoffs to earn a rematch with the Blades. Last season, the first place edmonton team was swept by the 4th place blades and GM Provencher was visibly upset. If Edmonton clinches the final spot, expect one ugly series.
