Subject: Saskatoon Ends Tough Season On Winning Note

What looked like a promising season at its midpoint ended with the Saskatoon Silos defeating the Winnipeg Wolves in a game that meant nothing to the Silos.

The Silos looked to be a playoff contender through the first half of the 2005 season, but collapsed in the second half to finish last in the GWHL's Western Conference. While the outcome was not all that surprising considering the team's current rebuilding status, it was nonetheless disappointing to many in the organization.

"I had hopes that some of our younger players would get a taste of playoff action", said Silos head coach Bob Hartley. "But our inexperience clearly showed in the second half, with some of the younger guys wilting under the pressure of having to earn a playoff berth."

"Overall, though, I'm happy with the way the club played throughout the season", added Hartley. "The team was in most games, but we didn't quite have the firepower to get things done."

The consolation prize for the Silos is that they will be drafting no worse than fifth overall, with a shot at the top pick as a result of the draft lottery.

"We should get ourselves a solid player regardless of where we pick", said Silos GM Ken McKenna. "There aren't necessarily any superstars at the top of the draft, but there will be players available that will help our depth."

The Silos can also feel good about the performances of some of their rookies this season. Two of them, Alexander Frolov and Barrett Jackman, should receive at least some consideration for the Rookie of the Year award.

The main topic of discussion over the next couple of weeks will focus on which players will be returning to the team for the 2006 season. There is some talk that the top five salaries on the team could all be moved or released. But it is more likely that players like Curtis Joseph and Craig Conroy will remain with the club, while Stu Barnes, Mike LeClerc and Ulf Dahlen could all move on. There are a few other players on the bubble, as well.

"We don't yet have a clear view of how this team will look next season", said McKenna. "But we were pleased with the progress made by our younger players. So, we think that with a bit of tinkering, we can be back in the playoff picture sooner than expected."
