Earlier today the Yellowknife Blades shocked even themselves by winning the decisive fourth game in the seven game series against the Victoria Totems. What is shocking is that the Totems were unable to win a single game in the series.
"I'm really proud of this team" remarked Blades coach Jacques Martin. "It hasn't always been pretty, but they found a way to win. Give credit to Victoria though. This series was a tough one, we just got a few lucky bounces."
This series was certainly much closer than the sweep would indicate. All 4 games were decided by one goal, and two of the games went into overtime.
Blades MVP candidate showed his true colors yet again in this series, scoring 2 game winning goals, including the decisive goal in the series clinching game today. Mike Modano also had a monster series, extending his lead atop the GWHL playoff scoring leaders. If he keeps it up, he could be the first GWHL player ever to win back to back playoff MVP honors.
The Blades have finally settled on Jose Theodore as their playoff starter. After a shaky round one, Theodore settled down this series and made some key saves at key times.
"Theo was much improved this series for sure" exclaimed Blades GM Neil Hayes. "We will need him to be outstanding in the finals as well if we are to win this thing again."
But that won't be easy. The GWHL finals will see Yellowknife pitted against either Montreal or Halifax. If Halifax is able to clinch the series, this years finals will be a rematch of last year, with Halifax no doubt ready to avenge their game 7 loss of a year ago. Montreal, on the other hand, has never made the finals, and the combination of their hunger and desire with the strong team they sport could cause the Blades a world of pain. Whoever the Blades play, the series will certainly be interesting.
