(HALIFAX)-You knew it was coming, maybe not so soon, but everyone knew. They knew that having four top flight right wingers with only three spots meant that someone had to go. And that someone was Jeff O'Neill. He and left winger Shawn Bates were traded to the Quebec Remparts for left winger Ryan Smyth and Quebec's 2nd round pick in the upcoming entry draft.

"It was a numbers game for sure," commented GM Stephen J. Holodinsky. "Someone had to go and with our present lineup of centers we delt that we could sacrifice a bit of toughness on the right wing for a majotr upgrade at left wing."

With Smyth coming aboard it is expected that recent acquisition Marco Sturm will play on the third line with Radek Bonk and Zigmund Palffy.

"We really like the speed combo of Sturm and Palffy on the third line. They can cover a lot of ice in a short amount of time," observed Holodinsky. "It will be hard for the opposition to slip their checks with them on the ice."

As for Ryan Smyth, he will in all likelihood inherit Sturm's old spot on the first line and play opposite 'Jumbo' Joe Thornton and Marian Hossa.

"Ryan gives us a more complete offensive threat on the first unit and we think he'll fit in well with Joe and Marian," explained the GM.

Is Holodinsky done dealing? It would seem so as he has improved the areas that needed improving. On the other hand, you never can tell with the Halifax GM. He might just turn around and make another one.
