(HALIFAX)-In a game very much reminiscent of the playoffs the Halifax Harpoons came away with a 4-2 win over the Victoria Totems tonight. Eric Lindros counted twice and Jeff O'Neill and Shawn Bates had the others while Fredrik Modin and Jeremy Roenick replied for the visitors. With the win the Harpoons clinched the Eastern Conference and home ice advantage at least until the GWHL Finals should they advance that far.

However the story of the game was Saku Koivu's vicious slash on goalie Sean Burke's wrist near the end of the third period during a goalmouth scramble. Koivu was immediately ejected from the game but Halifax GM Stephen J. Holodinsky was not satisfied. "Are you kidding me? That's got to be a suspension for sure, at least a couple of games," he remarked afterwards. "Our first string goalie is out for at least a week with a cracked wrist and all Koivu gets is a game misconduct? Garbage. I'll be sending the league head office tapes of this one for sure."

Burke was taken for x-rays after the game but it's probable that he did indeed break his wrist. What this does is thrust back-up Mike Richter into the spotlight. A spot starter lately, Richter is going to have to carry the team through the rest of the schedule and not let the momentum they have now slip away. "I can't say I've lived for this moment because Sean is the #1 guy here, no questions asked," Richter commented. "On the other hand I look forward to the challenge of keeping the team going while he is on the mend."

The team is expected to call up Roberto Luongo to back up Richter while Burke is out.

ON THE FARM: The Dartmouth Clippers, thanks to a win tonight against the New Westminister Knights have moved into second place in the Eastern Conference of the GWMHL, 10 points back of the Hull Harlequins. The team now has 4 players among the Top 10 in GWMHL scoring.
