With last night's 6-1 victory over the Montreal Marauders, the Saskatoon Silos continued their recent slate of games vs. Eastern Conference teams. They return home to face the Toronto Trojans tonight, then travel to Charlottetown immediately after tonight's game to face the Islanders.
The Marauders currently are the basement dwellers of the GWHL, but you wouldn't have known that in the first half of this home-and-home series. The Marauders shocked the Silos in the Silodome with a 7-5 victory over a possibly overconfident Saskatoon squad. The Marauders' victory was not a fluke, however, as they outshot, the Silos 39-33.
With the Silos locked in a tight battle to make the playoffs, the team was determined not to suffer another loss in the return match in Montreal.
Saskatoon dominated the Marauders in the first period, outshooting Montreal 15-2 while taking a 2-0 lead. The Marauders put up a better fight the rest of the way, but Silos' goaltender Curtis Joseph was there to make the saves when needed. Saskatoon added 4 more goals over the final two stanzas to take the 6-1 victory, which helped the Silos move 4 points up on the B.C. Huskies.
The Silos have played .500 hockey over their past six games, which has Coach Bob Hartley slightly concerned.
"I liked our effort tonight", said the coach, "but we've been a little sloppy of late. We can't become overconfident now, because there are playoff battles going on in both conferences, with several teams hungry and still very much in the race."
Silo Siftings: the Silos currently sport three of the top five scorers in the GWHL, with left wing John LeClair leading the way with 94 points (39G, 55A)...Saskatoon GM Ken McKenna opted not to make any deals before Friday's trade deadline. "We had one deal we considered seriously, but in the end, decided that it wouldn't be a positive move for this club's future."
