(OTTAWA)-Sometimes a little change is good for a struggling team. After back to back 4-3 losses to Toronto and a 5-1 thumping at the hands of the London Lasers, Coach Andy Murray decided to try something new with his lines up front and it paid off with a 6-3 triumph over the Ottawa Oaks.

The top line this night was one of Eric Lindros between Ziggy Palffy and Peter Bondra. Following them out was the trio of Joe Thornton flanked by Marian Hossa and Jeff O'Neill. The third line was steady Ron Francis with Shawn Bates and Milan Hejduk. The fourth combo simply replaced Francis with the veteran presence of Mark Messier.

Against the Oaks, it was the third line that was the most effective as Bates had a pair of goals assisted by both linemates who had immediate chemistry. That helped compensate for the second line which seemed lost for most of the game and didn't click much at all. The first line didn't really get a chance to work together as with 18:11 gone in the first period Eric Lindros had to leave the gmae with a hip flexor thanks to his being slammed into the boards from behind by Alexander Mogilny. Mogilny received a game misconduct in addition to the boarding double minor for his troubles. "Mogs used to be a clean player," Lindros said afterwards. "He was never like that when he was here. If it were a player playing on the third line for Ottawa that would have been a suspension but the league seems to have a double standard like that."

Besides Shawn Bates' pair, goalscorers for Halifax included Thornton, Rob Blake, Bondra, and Brian Leetch. Countering for Ottawa were Mogilny, Sergei Brylin, and Mike Grier.

CATCH OF THE DAY: Marian Hossa pointless in the last three games has finally been nudged from first place in the Stan Mikita Sweepstakes by B.C.s Mario Lemieux. "It would be nice to win it," admits Hossa, "but as long as the team gets on a roll that's what's important.".....Brian Leetch and Rob Blake are the first pair of defensemen to make the 70 point mark while playing for the same team. Both are fighting for the Bobby Orr Award as the league's highest scoring defenseman.....With the day off tomorrow it's possible that the team could welcome back first string goalie Sean Burke for Sunday's game versus the Whitehorse Warriors......Vaclav Prospal seems to be the odds on favorite to be called up from Dartmouth to replace Eric Lindros.
