The Saskatoon Silos have been sailing along of late, looking like a serious contender for the Hoser Cup.
That may no longer be the case, however, with the Silos having lost their star goaltender, Curtis Joseph, with what was diagnosed as a broken neck. Joseph sustained the injury during Saskatoon's 7-2 romp over the lowly Winnipeg Wolves when Wolves center Daymond Langkow barreled into the Silos' netminder as Langkow was driving to the net. There was little doubt that Langkow was intent on causing some mayhem, with referee Kerry Fraser slapping the Winnipeg center with a charging minor and a game misconduct.
Joseph is said to be out indefinitely, but it seems highly unlikely that he'll be back before the GWHL playoffs are completed. That means that backup Jocelyn Thibault must lead the Silos to the promised land, a task that Head Coach Bob Hartley thinks the goaltender is able to handle.
"Jocelyn struggled a bit earlier in the season," said the obviously crestfallen coach, "but he has played well of late. The team has been cutting down on the shots against, so they'll need to do more of that to support Jocelyn."
The Silos' players were clearly incensed by the cheap shot, but they immediately threw their support behind their spare netminder.
"We've had some chippy games against Winnipeg the past couple of seasons," said team captain Martin Gelinas. "They're probably frustrated by the lousy season they've had, but looking to injure the opposition is pretty low. We think 'Teebs' is more than capable of doing the job, though; we're playing real well, right now, so I'm not sure it matters who is in the net for us."
The game itself was a laugher, with Saskatoon getting out of the first period with a 6-1 lead. Winnipeg barely mustered any attack at any point during the game, looking mostly disinterested through much of the contest.
Langkow's malicious drive to the net was no laughing matter, however, but there isn't much the Silos can do about it- this season, anyway.
"Those are the type of hits you store away for next season," said resident tough guy Rich Pilon. "Winnipeg will be going home in a couple of days, but we still have some hockey to play, so we can't lose our minds."
"Besides," winked Pilon, "there will be plenty of opportunites next season to remind him of this game."
