The financial bottom line killed the Islanders playoff hopes. Despite a strong finish that saw the Isles win all but one of there games after they were eliminated from the playoffs, the season is still a large disappointment. The Isles were in the playoffs and going strong around trade deadline time, but the mighty buck hit them hard as GM Vansickle took advantage of the opportunity to unload high priced Mariusz Czerkawski for Scott Mellanby and a draft pick. Czerkawski was playing on the top line at the time and once he was traded, the Isles went into a slide that saw them lose 9 games in a row and fall right out of playoff contention.

On the plus side, the team is in far better financial shape now and GM Vansickle is much happier with the makeup of the team. Gone are the large contracts of LeClair and Czerkawski. The defense has improved leaps and bounds. Hopefully with a couple of off season improvements, the Isles will find themselves in position for a playoff spot come this time next year.
