A surprise move by Saskatoon Silos Head Coach Bob Hartley nearly ended up a disaster, but the Silos managed to pull out a 6-5 victory in the opening game of their Western Conference semi-final.
Hartley started emergency signee Dominic Roussel in goal, but Roussel was not up to the task, giving up five goals on just 14 shots. Dwayne Roloson replaced Roussel midway through the second period, pitching a shutout through the remainder of the game which allowed the Silos to pull off their comeback victory.
The scoring hero for the Silos, and the game's first star, was center Robert Lang. Lang registered a hat trick and added an assist on a goal by Todd Marchant. The game-winner was netted by John LeClair, a 2-goal scorer in the game, with less than two minutes left in the third period. Theo Fleury also had a big offensive game, notching three primary assists on Saskatoon's first three goals.
A relieved Hartley admitted that his starting Roussel was a move made to shake up his team.
"I think the boys were feeling a little sorry for themselves after Cujo and Jocelyn were injured," said Hartley. "I felt I needed to get their attention, which is why I started Dom. As it turned out, our team was more than up to the task in this game, but Dom may not have been."
Although happy with the win, the Silos maintained their business-like attitude, knowing that this is only one game in what should be a long series.
"We know they aren't down in that other locker room," said left wing John LeClair. "They probably think they should have won this game, but our guys gave a great effort, especially in the third period."
