Subject: Cats Licking Wounds as Elimination Looms

After dropping Game 4 and letting the Saskatoon Silos draw even 2-2 in the Western Conference Semi-finals, the Calgary Cougars were hoping to rebound in game 5. However the Cougars were blown out of the water in game five 8-3, in a game that was absolutely dominated by their Prairie counterparts.

Fred Braithwaite had an outstanding regular season for the Cats, finishing first in the league in save percentage, tied for first in shutouts, and third in goals against average. Yet the Silos have thus far shown no respect to Braithwaite, making him look like the goalie who played last year in the minors for Calgary. Game 5 was no exception, as Braithwaite gave up 5 goals on 22 shots. Trevor Kidd did no better in relief, yielding 3 markers on 10 shots.

With Curtis Joseph laid up with injury, many in Calgary thought the Cougars offence would shine against the 2nd and 3rd string goalies in Saskatoon. However again in game 5, the Cougars big guns were held in check, managing only 19 shots (while the Silos peppered Calgary with 32).

Calgary Coach Craig MacTavish seemed bewildered after the game. “These guy have been able to shutdown on system all season long. We certainly have not looked like the defending champions against them.” Odds are MacTavish isn’t throwing in the towel just yet thought. The team was down 3-1 in the series last year before rallying to win 3 straight and the series. However, the Cougars will need to seriously regroup for game 6 if they want any chance of trying to force a game 7 in Calgary.
