Fresh off of their 7-game series victory over the Calgary Cougars, the Saskatoon Silos began their Western Conference final with a bang, defeating the favored Victoria Totems 6-3.
The Totems looked to be a little rusty after their short layoff leading up to the series, with the Silos taking advantage of Victoria's rustiness.
The hero of Tuesday's game was Saskatoon center Claude Lapointe, who picked up two goals and one assist in the victory. Filip Kuba, Martin Gelinas and Robert Kron chipped in two points apiece, while goaltender Jocelyn Thibault turned aside 21 of 24 shots for the win.
The game was tied at 3-3 midway through the second period, but a goal by Kron at 16:28 of that period seemed to take the life out of the Totems. The Silos added power play goals a minute apart in the third period following a boarding major on Saku Koivu, and the Silos never looked back.
Team captain Martin Gelinas was clearly pleased with the results of game 1, although he was a bit surprised at the margin of victory.
"Anytime you can get six past Patrick Roy, you should consider yourself fortunate," said Gelinas. "We did a good job of shutting down their big guys, and our line managed to chip in some offense, so it was definitely a good night."
Head Coach Bob Hartley knows that the win tonight may have been a bit deceiving, and he expects Victoria to come out attacking in the next game.
"I'm not sure if they were groggy, or just a bit overconfident," shrugged the coach, "but I know they'll be ready for the next game. Our guys stuck to our system tonight, plus we got contributions from all over the lineup. It was a nice effort by the boys tonight."
Silo Siftings: There has been some talk that goaltender Curtis Joseph, who was presumed to be out of the lineup for the remainder of the year, may return if the Silos can advance to the next round. His condition has been said to have improved rapidly, but no one in the organization would comment on his status.
