As Saskatoon GM Ken McKenna had promised, he and his scouts concentrated on drafting wingers and defensemen at the now completed 2004 GWHL Draft. All seven of the players chosen by the Silos play either on the wing or on defense, with three of those players having the potential to step in and play immediately.
The first selection for the Silos, 15th overall, was Finnish winger Niklas Hagman. Hagman, who can play either wing, is a high-energy player who rarely takes a shift off. There are some who think that Hagman's offensive potential is limited, but the Silos' scouts think his work ethic will help his offensive game.
The Silos went for a defenseman in the second round of the draft, selecting Swedish rearguard Daniel Tjarnqvist. The team felt they needed to add a defenseman who could step in immediately and play, and they think Tjarnqvist can do that. The Swede is said to be a smart defenseman with some offensive ability, so he should be a good fit on the Silos' roster.
Saskatoon's first of four third round selections, Russian left winger Timofei Shishkanov, appears to be a bit of a boom-or-bust proposition. Shishkanov had a good season offensively in the QMJHL, but he may not be ready to make the jump to the GWHL.
Nolan Yonkman was the first of two defensemen chosen by Saskatoon in the third round of the draft. Yonkman is a big rearguard with good ability, whose main shortcoming is said to be his puck handling.
The Silos' third pick of the final round was Czech right winger Vladimir Orszagh. Orszagh is another player that could step into the lineup as early as next season. Like Hagman, Orszagh has a good motor to go along with some solid offensive skills, but he'll need to improve his defensive game to become a good two-way forward.
The Silos again went for a defenseman with their final selection of the third, choosing Shaone Morrisonn. Morrisonn has good, all-around ability, but he'll need to add some weight to his skinny frame to compete at the next level.
Saskatoon received a compensatory pick for the loss of UFA Gary Roberts, which they used to select right winger Jason Pominville. Pominville is said to be a skilled winger with a good work ethic who will need to overcome a slight build to make it in the GWHL.
