In a clear sign that his team is now in rebuilding mode, Saskatoon Silos' GM Ken McKenna pulled the trigger on a major deal with the division-rival Winnipeg Wolves.
Leaving Saskatoon is all-time leading scorer Alexei Yashin, as well as scoring winger John LeClair. In addition to those two players, the Silos were said to have sent a "considerable" amount of cash to Winnipeg.
Coming to the Silos are wingers Mike LeClerc and Ruslan Fedotenko, plus Saskatoon's 2005 first round pick, as well as their 2008 third round pick. While the return may not seem like much to Saskatoon fans, the Silos' GM seemed pleased with the players coming his way.
"This was the best deal we could get", said McKenna. "Alex and John are costly players, so it was difficult to find a good fit with another team. Winnipeg GM Shane McGregor made a very fair offer, so we felt it was the right time to make a deal."
The players coming to the Silos differ in their abilities. LeClerc provides some offense and a little grit, while Fedotenko could develop into a scoring winger. Both players are expected to play for the Silos this season.
The centerpiece of the trade, at least for the Silos, is probably the return of their first round pick in the next GWHL Entry Draft. With the team looking to rebuild, that pick could end up being a fairly high one in a good draft.
"There are some guys near the top of that draft that interest us," agreed the GM, "but there should also be good depth throughout the course of the three rounds."
Other names rumored to be on the block include veteran defensemen Don Sweeney and Dave Karpa, as well as right wing Theoren Fleury. McKenna would not comment on those players, however.
